Rio Tinto Iron Ore Atlantic explored the feasibility of mining iron ore deposits in the Republic of Guinea. The Simandou Project included three components: the infrastructure required to operate a large scale iron or mine in the Simabdou range; a railway system extending from the west side of the Simandou range to the Morébaya estuary in northern Kabak; and a new deepwater port off the estuarine island of Kabak (south of Conakry).
MRF was contracted to review the data collection plan for sea turtles, review the port design plan and potential impacts to marine turtles, highlight gaps and recommend studies to inform the impact assessment. MRF was also requested to review the impacts and suggested mitigations for sea turtles at the port following the SEIA.
