The Marine Research Foundation is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information in accordance with the Malaysia Privacy and Data Protection Act 2010. These guidelines govern the collection, use, handling and disclosure of personal and sensitive information. This Privacy Statement explains how the Marine Research Foundation will handle your personal information when you access and interact with us.

A. What is personal information?

For the purposes of this Privacy Statement, the term ‘personal information’ has the same meaning as provided in the Malaysia Privacy and Data Protection Act 2010, to include:

‘information or an opinion (including information or an opinion forming part of a database), that is recorded in any form and whether true or not, about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information or opinion’.

B. Collection of personal information

It is intended that this Website can be used anonymously. However, for some functions, the collection of personal information is necessary or unavoidable. Examples of where it may be necessary or unavoidable for the Marine Research Foundation to collect your personal information via this Website may include when you or another person:

  • submit electronic forms via this Website;
  • respond to an online survey which we may conduct on this Website;
  • provide any message or comment to us on this Website;
  • click through to the Website from any email from the Marine Research Foundation.

  1. When another person provides your personal information to us. The Marine Research Foundation cannot prevent this. C. Use and disclosure of personal information

We will only use personal information provided for the purposes for which it was collected, or for a secondary purpose where we are permitted to do so under the Privacy and Data Protection Act, 2010. We may disclose personal information to third parties engaged to carry out services on behalf of the Marine Research Foundation, to third parties involved in any restructuring of the Marine Research Foundation as an organisation, and if required by law.

D. Cookies  

This Website uses cookies to make your experience of the site easier and more efficient. A cookie is a small data file placed on your hard drive by a web page server. E. Measuring the usage of our websites 

The Marine Research Foundation uses Google Analytics (including Google Signals) to collect data to track how our visitors interact with this Website.  This data includes the number of visits to the Website, the time and date of visits to the Website and its pages, where the user came from, what the user did on the site and whether the user has completed any transactions on the site such as newsletter registration.

This information is anonymous and is used for statistical purposes to ensure that our Website is providing information relevant to our users. Google Analytics uses a first-party cookie and JavaScript code to collect this information. We use Google Analytics Advertising Features.

This Privacy Statement applies only to the the Marine Research Foundation website and does not apply to Linked Sites. When accessing Linked Sites from any hyperlink appearing on this website, we recommend that you read any applicable privacy statement or policy applicable to that Linked Site.

G. Accessing and correcting personal information

You may request access, at any time, to any personal information we may have collected about you. We will take reasonable steps to ensure that personal information is accurate, complete and up to date whenever the Marine Research Foundation collects, discloses or uses it. You may also request that we correct your personal information if you think it is not accurate, complete or up to date.

H. Managing privacy and data breaches

The Marine Research Foundation has procedures in place to detect and manage privacy and data breaches. These follow Malaysian Government requirements. If you suspect information supplied to the Marine Research Foundation has been breached, please contact the Executive Director to manage the breach.

If a possible breach has occurred with data collected by a contracted third party as part of work funded by the Marine Research Foundation. it is recommended you first consult with the third party directly, however please contact the Executive Director using the contact details below if you need further support.
