Dr. Nicolas Pilcher, Executive Director of MRF, was appointed as an Independent Member of the Expert Panel comprising State and Commonwealth government department, subject matter experts and Chevron Australia representatives to guide the development of the Gorgon Gas Project with respect to the continued protection of endangered sea turtles nesting and foraging within the vicinity of Barrow Island, Western Australia.

The Gorgon Project involves the construction of a 15 million tonnes per year Liquefied Gas facility, domestic gas plans and supporting infrastructure on Barrow Island, a Class A Nature Reserve. Barrow is located some 85 km off the Western Australian Pilbara coast and has been a Class A Nature Reserve since 2010. The Marine Turtle Expert Panel concerns itself with providing expert technical advice to Chevron Australia to minimise and mitigate any potential impacts by the Gorgon Project on marine turtles.
